Legal Rights in Treatment
The Mental Health Association of MN advocates speak with persons who feel their rights under the law have been violated by a treating professional, a health care facility or by the residential home in which they live. The contacting party and the advocate will discuss the specific actions or behaviors, which are the source of the complaint. We will talk about the rights that are granted under the law and consider how the specifics of the complaint relate to the rights written into the law.
In some cases, a call or letter to the identified party will resolve the problem. In some circumstances the caller with the complaint will need to file the complaint with the appropriate Minnesota licensing board within the Minnesota Department of Human Services or Department of Health. The advocate will direct the client to the appropriate office.
