Improper Treatment and Discrimination

In the majority of circumstances, an individual would bring the inequitable treatment to her/his supervisor. If this step does not remedy the situation, or if the supervisor is a part of the problem, it is usually best to follow the organization’s grievance process first. Many times this will bring resolution to the problem. When it does not bring a satisfactory solution, one can at least say that the suggested steps toward problem resolution were attempted prior to stepping outside the organization for assistance.

When it is necessary to seek outside help to address the issue of inequitable treatment, there are different options available to the individual with a disability. Complaints about violations of Title I (employment) by units of state and local government or by private employers should be filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. You may call 1-800-669-4000 (voice) or 1-800-669-6820 (TDD) to reach the field office for your area. You may also call the Minnesota Office of Human Rights. That number is 1-800-657-3704. In some cases, you may wish to work with a private practice attorney with experience in the field.
