Employment
People contact the Mental Health Association of MN (MHAM) about a variety of employment issues. Advocates speak with people who are working, but if the duties and expectations of the job are posing a challenge to the employee who has a mental illness, we may discuss the possibility of a request for a reasonable accommodation that may make it easier to perform the essential functions of the job. The person with a mental illness may wish to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of disclosing the mental illness. People on Social Security may call and wish to talk about how employment will affect their benefits. Others will call stating that they have a mental illness, but want to work. However, they believe that some job supports need to be in place before they can be successful. MHAM will inform the individual of the employment supports that available and how to go about acquiring access to those supports.
