Civil Issues

The Mental Health Association of MN Advocacy Program is contacted for assistance on a number of civil issues. People call and speak with an advocate when there are problems with a guardian, a conservator, child support, child protection, child custody and visitation. In some cases, a call may be made or a letter written on behalf of the client to resolve the issue. At other times, the issue is under the jurisdiction of a court. The advocate would ask the client if she/he has an attorney to represent their position. If the client has an attorney, the advocate may help the client prepare for the time with the attorney. If the person does not have an attorney, possible contacts for legal supports would be provided. When affordable legal services are not available, the client and the advocate will discuss how the client can best prepare their pro se case.
