Individual Advocacy Program
The Mental Health Association of MN’s (MHAM) Individual Advocacy Program seeks to empower individuals with mental illnesses to develop self advocacy skills to overcome barriers. People with mental illnesses, their families and friends, and any interested individuals can contact MHAM when they are facing barriers or searching for resources in meeting their needs. We provide information and tools needed to access community resources, maintain civil rights, and/or manage the illness.
Advocates can work with individuals on a variety of issues and our services are free of charge. Some examples of those issues are:
- Access to Health Care and Community Services
- Legal Rights in Treatment
- Guardianship and Conservatorship
- Civil Commitment
- Civil Issues
- Criminal Issues
- Employment
- Housing
- Insurance
- Social Security
- Information and Support Resources
- Resource Listings
Advocates may assist in providing information on mental illnesses and ideas on ways to support the individual. Educational materials can be mailed at a person's request.
