About Refugee Mental Health Training

Sponsored by MCC Refugee Services

"New Immigrants and their U.S.-born descendants will account for 82 percent of the nation's population growth, while resident population and its descendants will account for 18 percent." - Pew Research Center

A Few Facts:

  • The mental health market of the future: 2,320 refugee families arrived in Minnesota in 2010. Almost 52,000 refugee families have resettled in Minnesota in the past 10 years. Mental health clinicians will see clients who are or have been refugees.
  • Are you a provider for UCare, HealthPartners, Medica or Medical Assistance? If so, you are obligated to provide culturally competent care and services for Limited English Proficiency clients. These workshops will help you meet such requirements.

In this training you will learn to develop the skills needed to provide culturally competent mental health care to refugees and their families.

Audience: Training sessions are designed for Mental Health professionals. ARMHS workers and Community Health Workers (CHWs) are welcome to attend. You may register for any combination of trainings or for a single training. Each topic is offered only once and is not scheduled to be repeated. We highly recommend registering for several trainings, which are offered one day per month over four months.

Certificate of Specialized Training in Refugee Mental Health: Participants who attend three all-day training including "Refugee Mental Health in Minnesota," "Assessment, Diagnosis, and Treatment," and "working with Interpreters," will earn a specialized training certificate upon completion. These participants will be eligible to join the refugee mental health referral pool. Resettlement agencies, community based organizations, primary care doctors and public health professionals will use this list to make mental health referrals.

Sponsor: Refugee Services, MCC has provided resettlement services to refugees in the Twin Cities since 1984 through a cooperative agreement with the US Department of State. In 2008 MCC developed an initiative to build local community capacity to better meet refugee mental health needs. Visit the website at: www.mnchurches.org/refugeeservices.
